Why Australians love "-lee" names

Ashley, Bradley, Bentley, Brooke, Kylie... somewhere along the line, Aussie parents decided that every name should end in "-lee". And honestly? It sounds nice.

The "-lee" ending comes from Old English, where it meant "clearing" or "meadow". So Ashley meant "ash tree clearing", Bradley meant "broad clearing", and so on. But somewhere along the way, it stopped being a geographical description and started being a vibe.

Now we're just adding "-lee" to everything. Bentley? "Bent grass clearing"? Sure, why not. Kylie? Wait, Kylie doesn't end in "-lee". Never mind, she's still cool.

The funny thing is, the trend started in America and then crossed the Pacific. Australians took one look at it and thought "yeah, that sounds nice". And now we've got a whole generation of Ashleys and Brookes. It's not going anywhere. In fact, we're probably about to start adding "-lee" to more names. Watch this space. Or should we say, "Watch this space-lee"?
