Why Australians use place names as first names

Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth... wait, those are cities. But somewhere along the way, Australians started naming their kids after places. India, Georgia, Virginia, Brooklyn — suddenly every baby had an address.

The tradition started with the wealthy. Back in the 1800s, posh British families would name their daughters after the family estate — "Lady Rose of Downton Abbey" style. Then it trickled down to the rest of us, and suddenly anyone could name their daughter after a suburb.

The funny thing is, Australians have barely started using our own cities as names. We've got Sydney (which is technically a girl's name), but Melbourne? Brisbane? Perth? Not yet. Maybe one day. Imagine little Perth running around the playground. "Perth, stop hitting your brother." It has a ring to it.

For now, we're sticking with international place names. India sounds exotic. Georgia sounds elegant. Virginia sounds... American. But hey, if it sounds nice, who cares where it comes from? Right?
