The "middle name" superpower

Why do Australians love middle names so much? It's not just tradition — it's a secret superpower that lets you honour Grandma without actually naming your baby "Ethel".

The middle name is the unsung hero of the naming world. You can name your daughter Charlotte, and then slip Grandma Ethel in as the middle name. Problem solved! Grandma feels honoured, your daughter doesn't have to spend her life correcting teachers, and everyone wins.

It's also a safety net. If you love two names but can only pick one, stick the other one in the middle. "Harper Rose" — you get to use both! "William James" — classic double hit. The middle name is where all the compromise happens.

And let's not forget the "middle name as a punishment" angle. If you're really mad at someone, you can name your kid after them. Just stick it in the middle, where no one will ever see it. "Chloe Karen Johnson" — ouch. But don't worry, we won't tell anyone.
